They call it a driving licence in the UK, and a driver license in the US, but here in Australia it's officially known as a driver licence. You'll hear Aussies calling it a driver's licence when they speak though, so feel free to use whatever name you want!

Driver licence translations by state
Please note that there are also special requirements for New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Check the rules below for the state(s) where you will be driving before ordering your translation.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
Visiting drivers (3 months or less) If you want to drive in the ACT with your foreign licence you will need either an official English translation or an international driving permit. If you choose to get a translation, you can use one that has been done by TradTrans. It will be translated by a NAATI certified translator, and this qualifies as an official English translation. Email now for adriver licence translation |
If you are an overseas licence holder and you drive in the ACT you must carry: |
Licence transfers (European licences) If you want to exchange your foreign licence for an ACT licence, you will probably need a driver licence translation. If your licence is from an approved country such as Italy, Spain or Switzerland you may need a driver licence translation, although no mention of it is made on their website. See the advice given above for ACT visiting drivers. |
Driver licence holders moving to the ACT to reside are required to obtain an ACT driver licence within three months of taking up residency in the ACT. |
Licence transfers (Latin American licences) If your licence is from elsewhere you will need a driver licence translation, and you can use one that has been done by TradTrans. It will be translated by a NAATI certified translator, and this qualifies as an official English translation. Please note that NAATI do not issue the actual translations themselves, they just certify the translators who can issue the translations. Email now for adriver licence translation |
What to take to the assessment |
New South Wales (NSW)
Visitor drivers (Unlimited time, conditions apply) If you want to drive in NSW with your foreign licence you will need either an English translation or an international driving permit. If you choose to get a translation, you can probably use one that has been done by TradTrans. You can drive as a visitor indefinitely if you don't have permanent residence or citizenship. The NSW Roads and Maritime Service does not provide any specifications to what type of English translation is required, and the NSW Police will be the ones to make the decision if you get stopped while driving. Email now for adriver licence translation |
If you hold an overseas licence, you are allowed to drive the vehicles covered by your overseas licence in NSW indefinitely, as long as: |
Licence transfers If you want to exchange your foreign licence for a NSW licence, you will need an official English translation, but TradTrans is not able to provide one that meets your needs. You will need to seek a translation from an authorised provider. |
Documents not written in English |
Northern Territory (NT)
Visitor drivers (3 months) If you want to drive in the NT with your foreign licence you may not need a translation at all. If your licence has a picture of a car or motorcycle on it (such as Italy, Spain, Uruguay and some places in Argentina), you shouldn't need a translation. Everyone else will need an International Driving Permit, and TradTrans is not able to assist with this request. |
If your overseas licence is in a language other than English, and the type of vehicle you are authorised to drive cannot be easily recognised, you will also need to carry an International Driving Permit. |
Licence transfers (European licences) If your licence is from a recognised country such as Italy, Spain or Switzerland you can use a translation that has been done by a NAATI certified translator. This qualifies as an official translation by an authorised translator. It appears as though you will also need an international driving permit. Email now |
If your licence is recognised |
Non-European licences If your licence is not from Europe you will only need either an International Driving Permit or an official translation into English by an authorised translator. You don't need both :) Email now for adriver licence translation |
If your country is not on these lists |
Queensland (QLD)
Visiting drivers (3+ months) If you want to drive in QLD with your foreign licence you will need a recognised English translation, and you can use one that has been done by TradTrans. It will be translated by a NAATI certified translator, and this qualifies as an approved translation. You can also drive as a visitor for longer than 3 months if you don't have a residence visa or citizenship. Email now for adriver licence translation |
If your licence isn’t in English, you should carry a recognised English translation of it when you’re driving. Show this translation to police when you have to show your driver licence. |
Licence transfers (residents and citizens for more than three months) You will need a translation that has been done by a NAATI certified translator. This qualifies as a recognised English translation. Email now for adriver licence translation |
How to apply for a Queensland driver licence |
South Australia (SA)
Visitor drivers (90 days) If you want to drive in SA with your foreign licence you will need an approved English translation, and you can use one that has been done by TradTrans. It will be translated by a NAATI certified translator, and this qualifies as an approved translation. The translation must also be signed by the translator, but that's not a problem because TradTrans will always sign, date, stamp and certify all driver licence translations. Because of the special rules for licence transfers (see below), it's probably also a good idea to get the original document posted out to you. Let TradTrans know when ordering your translation that you intend to drive in SA and would like a hardcopy. Email now for adriver licence translation |
Driver's licence translations will only be accepted if they meet one of these conditions: |
Licence transfers (European licences) If your licence is from Europe (Italy, Spain or Switzerland), you will need a licence translation even though it doesn't say so specifically on their website. If you ask them personally they will advise that you do need a translation. They may recommend that you use a translation from the SA Interpreting and Translation Centre, but you can actually use a translation that has been done by a NAATI certified translator as well. On enquiry you'll discover that the detailed translation requirements are actually the same as those for a short term visitor to South Australia, so see the above information for SA visiting drivers. Email now for adriver licence translation |
Transfer an interstate or overseas driver's licence |
Licence transfers (Latin American licences) If your licence is from elsewhere, you probably won't need a translation because you'll have to take all the tests again :( |
What you need to do to transfer your overseas Licence |
Tasmania (TAS)

If you choose to get a driver licence translation, you can use one that has been done by TradTrans. It will be translated by a NAATI certified translator, and this qualifies as being done by a person accredited to translate. The reference to "accredited" translators is out-of-date, as NAATI moved from an accreditation system to a certification system on 01 January 2018. You can get more information about the new system here. Email now for adriver licence translation |
If your overseas licence is not in English, you must also carry either: |

You can get more information about the new system here. Email now for adriver licence translation |
If your overseas licence is in a language other than English, you also need to carry an English translation or international driving permit whenever you drive. |
Licence transfers (European) If your licence is from Europe (Italy, Spain or Switzerland), you can use a translation that has been done by a NAATI certified translator. This qualifies as a NAATI approved English translation. Please note that NAATI do not approve the actual translations themselves, they just approve (certify) the translators who can issue the translations. |
Bring to your appointment ... a NAATI approved English translation of your licence or an international driving permit (only required if your overseas licence isn't in English). |
Licence transfer (Latin American licences) If your licence is from elsewhere, you may not need a translation because you'll probably have to take all the tests again :( |
If you already have a licence and it's not from a Recognised Country, you'll need to complete an Overseas Licence Verification appointment prior to sitting your Learner Permit test. You'll need to call 131171 or visit a Customer Service Centre to make a Licence Verification Appointment. |
Western Australia (WA)
Visiting drivers (Unlimited time) If you want to drive in WA with your foreign licence you will need either an approved English translation or an international driving permit. If you choose to get a driver licence translation, you can use one that has been done by TradTrans. It will be translated by a NAATI certified translator, and this qualifies as an official English translation for WA licence transfers below, so it should be the same here. You may also need an original copy posted out as photocopies are not acceptable for WA licence transfers (see below). That's not a problem though as TradTrans is happy to provide hard copies on request. Email now for adriver licence translation |
If you are a visitor to Western Australia (WA), you may drive only those vehicles that you are authorised to drive on your overseas licence, for as long as it remains valid in the country of issue. If your overseas licence is not in English, you must carry an international driving permit or an approved English translation of your licence with you when you drive. |

You may also need an original copy posted out as photocopies are not acceptable. That's not a problem though as TradTrans is happy to provide hard copies on request.
