Certified copy
Please note that some skills assessment authorities also require a certified copy of the translation in addition to a certified copy of the original document. Electronic documents cannot yet be certified by JPs in Australia, therefore if this applies to your skills assessment you will need to request a hard copy/paper copy of the translation so that you can also have the translation certified by a JP (or other suitable professional) as a ‘true copy’.
- Certified copy: Witnessed by a JP (or other authorised profession) as a ‘true copy’ of the original.
- Certified translation: Translated by a certified translator AND includes a certification statement indicating that the translation is a ‘true and accurate translation’ (or words to that effect). This type of certification must be done by the translator.
- Certified copy of the translation: Combination of the above. A certified translation that has been witnessed by a JP (or other authorised profession) as a ‘true copy’ of the original translation. It will usually have certification statements by both the translator and the JP.
What should it look like?
At least 36 of the skills assessment authorities require the translation to be completed by a certified translator (accredited, approved, authorised, certified, NAATI, official, professional, qualified, recognised, or registered translator) but some of the other requirements are a bit more complex.
Certified translations provided by TradTrans strive to comply with these requirements because by default TradTrans translations are:
- full translations
- issued in colour
- certified and stamped by the translator on every page
- on letterhead that includes the translator’s name, address, email, website and NAATI qualifications
- accompanied by a stamped copy of the source document
- delivered with the stamped translation and the stamped source document combined in a single PDF file
- delivered as separate PDFs for each individual source document
- prepared in accordance with the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) Best Practices for the Translation of Official and Legal Documents
If you need any other format, just let TradTrans know when you order. TradTrans has you covered!

Translating documents within Australia:
https://www.acs.org.au/msa/infohub/document-translation.html
Accurate document presentation is critical for skilled migration. Acceptable translations may be obtained from translators accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
The ACS AcudocX partnership offers ACS members instant access to a complete translation management solution where NAATI-certified translations are accessible, easy to navigate, and affordable. Take advantage of the translation discount through the ACS AcudocX partnership.
Translating documents outside Australia:
https://www.acs.org.au/msa/infohub/document-translation.html
ACS members can also benefit from the AcudocX partnership when translating documents abroad. Get instant access to NAATI-certified translators and enjoy the same benefits and discounts offered to those in Australia.
Other acceptable translations can be obtained from the Awarding Institution or contact your nearest Australian Diplomatic or Consular Mission for a list of approved translation services in your country.
Overseas translations must be completed on the translating organisation’s letterhead and include
– An official stamp
– The name of the translator
– The translator’s signature and contact telephone number legibly printed with the signature – it must be possible for ACS to contact the translator to verify the document
From the information available online it is not clear whether the ACS accept extract translations or require a signature for documents translated within Australia. However the Acudocx system that they refer to generally relates to extract translations using the NAATI digital signature, so it is a fair guess that would be an acceptable format. If you want to meet the international requirements for safety, ask for a hard copy to be posted out with the NAATI wet/physical stamp and translator’s signature.
For more information see the ACS website.

Supreme Court of the Northern Territory
2.1 Overseas Qualifications
The Board does not conduct assessments of overseas qualifications and ordinarily refers any application for assessment to the NSW Board. Applicants should therefore apply directly to the NSW Board for assessment of their overseas qualifications and then apply to the Board for adoption of that assessment, as well as to seek any necessary consequential directions, via an Application for Directions.
5.2 Criminal History Checks
There are different requirements in respect of offending committed outside of Australia. Firstly, where an overseas criminal history check is not in English, the applicant must arrange for a translation of the document by a suitably qualified translator. The translation is to be annexed to the pro forma affidavit together with documentary evidence of the qualifications of the translator.
For more information see the Supreme Court guidelines on applying for admission as a legal practitioner.
